Gedung Kesenian Jakarta

Talking about art and culture, Jakarta also has a building that holds a variety of art history in Indonesia. Named Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, which is an old building heritage Dutch government, which until now still standing strong in Central Jakarta. This building is where the artists from all over the archipelago demonstrate his artistic creations, such as drama, theater, film, literature, and so forth.
This building is a neo-renaissance style building built in 1821 at Weltevreden is referred to as the art building Schouwburg Weltevreden Theater Building, also known as Comedy. Jakarta Arts Building is located at Jalan Gedung Kesenian No.. 1 Central Jakarta.The emergence of this building comes from the Governor-General of the Netherlands, Daendels. Then realized by the Governor-General of England, Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814.The historic building is shaped with Empire style by architect architect Jeni VOC officers, Major Schultze.



 History of the luxurious-looking building that was once used for the first Youth Congress (1926). And, in this building is also on August 29, 1945, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia Ir. Soekarno inaugurate the Central Indonesian National Committee (KNIP) and met several times in this building.
This building was once used also by the University of Indonesia, Faculty of Economics & Law (1951), circa 1957-1961 used as the National Theatre Academy Indonesia (ATNI), in 1968 used to be cinema "Diana" and the 1969 Cinema "City Theater". Finally in 1984 restored its function as the Art Building (Decree of the Governor of Jakarta Capital Special Region No.. 24 in 1984).

This building was renovated in 1987 and began using the official name of Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. Previously the building was known as New Market Building and the Building Arts Comedy. Used for lighting candles and kerosene, and then in 1864 used gas lamps. In 1882 electric lights began to be used for lighting in the building.
